Martyr of the Amazon: The life of Sr. Dorothy Stang
1. According to Hallmark Two of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community, “We honor the dignity and sacredness of each person. “How do Sr. Dorothy’s words and actions suggest she lived by this simple principle? Provide and analyze two examples that stand out.
Sister Dorothy an early life of humbleness and love. At the age of 17 she decided she wanted to be a nun. While reading the book i notice she did lived by the simple principle because she never mind where she had to sleep. When she arrived at Arizona she was given a neat place to live, but she did not agree because she saw the conditions where the people had to live in. S.Dorothy was sent to brazil to study at the center for Intercultural Formation. Which was located above Rio de Janerio. She always wanted to be a missionary and she got the chance to do it in brazil. S.Dorothy was a great example to everyone base she did lived by the simple principles
2. Some may argue that in her ministering to the people of the Amazon Sr. Dorothy strayed too far from the spiritual needs of the people and got too involved in the earthy politics of the region. Do you agree? why or why not? Should a clergy person be involved in social transformation such a degree that it involves taking sides in legal and political issues why or why not?
I do not agree with the comments people gave about sister Dorothy getting involved a lot. I do believe she did got involved ally but because she cared so much for this world that she want it to be a better place. with all her hard work and dedication she helped in a lot of poor community. She showed humbleness and love toward the people that needed her. When a clergy gets involved in social transformation it means that they are really paginate on what they believe in. Sister Dorothy did took her duties to the limit, but S.Dorothy had no limits when it came to helping others and doing what is best for the people. What i see in S.Dorothy is a lot of passion, she got involved in legal and political issues. If she believed it was right for the people then she did the right thing, and i do agree with all of her involvement. It inspires people to accomplish what they set for.
3. Students often tell us that their goal in life is to be happy. What do you think is necessary to live a happy life? Did Dorothy live a happy life? What is your evidence?
A lot of people including myself have the goal to be happy and to live a happy life. What we need is to accomplish our goals, do what makes us happy, have dreams, and most important have a family. Sister Dorothy had all these factor of being happy, so i do believe she lived a happy life. Having goals helps us set our mind on something that will makes us feel like winners or achievers. Sister Dorothy has a lot of goal, but her main goal was to help people. Helping people was what made her happy. When sister Dorothy was teaching at a school at Arizona she helped a kid to speak fluent english. His name was Luis. She will tell Luis to stay during recess to help him with his english. Having dreams is very much like accomplishing goals. But the dreams comes first. Sister Dorthy had the dream to be a missionary in China, she was not able to go to china but she was sent to brazil which she felt it was close enough of her life long dream. Sister Dorothy not only had her mom and dad as a family but i think she made a family every where so go. She would help everyone, she was generous, and humble that she earn the love of everyone that surrounded her.
